Credit Life Insurance Survey launched by FAI and IPA

The Financial Access Initiative and Innovations for Poverty Action invite institutions to participate in a short survey on credit life insurance products. This survey explores questions around design, demand, and use of credit life insurance.

FAI and IPA are committed to rigorous research focused on expanding access to quality financial services for low-income individuals.  

If your institution offers or plans to offer credit life insurance, please participate in the survey - it should take less than 15 minutes.

ICMIF launches Survey on the Role of Mutuals and Regulation

In recognition of the growing importance of microinsurance as a tool for poverty alleviation the IAIS Issues paper -  "Issues in Regulation and Supervision on Micro Insurance" has recommended an in-depth study to understand further the specific nature and role of mutuals, cooperatives, and community based institutions in providing microinsurance and the regulatory framework under which they are operating in.  

ICMIF is undertaking research as input to this new Issues paper and enclosed is a current list of references on material relating to mutual/cooperative microinsurers and providers we are aware of.

As definitions differ from country to country, for the purpose of this survey the definition/characteristics of the entities to be covered are as follows:

  • Member-owned organizations
  • Created to serve members' common interest
  • Surplus/loss with members
  • Democratic voting (proportional) and involvement in decision making
  • Provide some form of insurance coverage to members (additional non-member business possible)

Examples of entities include mutuals, cooperatives, friendly societies, burial societies, community-based organizations, self-insuring schemes etc.

Two Microinsurance Network member shortlisted for the 2009 FT Sustainable Banking Awards

The Financial Times and IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, have announced the shortlists for the 2009 FT Sustainable Banking Awards. The Awards, now in their fourth year, were created to recognise banks and other financial institutions that have shown leadership and innovation in integrating social, environmental and corporate governance considerations into their operations.

MicroEnsure (UK) and ParaLife Group (Switzerland), two Microinsurance Network members, have been shortlisted for the 2009 Financial Times Sustainable Banking Awards, in the category Achievement for Basic Needs Financing.

Key Performance Indicators in Microinsurance: A collaboration between three members

An introductory workshop on the Key Performance Indicators in Microinsurance was piloted in Brussels on April 1, 2009 organised by ADA, BRS and GTZ as part of their role in the Performance Indicators Working Group.

The purpose of the introductory workshop is to inform donors and others interested in microinsurance on the use and interpretation of key performance indicators. Plans are to develop a third workshop for practitioners on detailed information on how to calculated all the performance indicators.

ADA and BRS have furthermore launched microfact.org, an online platform which aims to strengthen performances of Microfinance and Microinsurance Institutions by promoting tools, including the ones developped with the Performance Indicators Working group.
