Interview with AKAM’s microinsurance specialist Peter Wrede

Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance (AKAM) is an a not-for-profit international development agency with substantial experience in developing micro health insurance products.  Realising the fact that a near absence of health insurance often leaves the poor impoverished due to illnesses and sudden causalities, AKAM opened the first Microinsurance Agency Pakistan in 2007 and the first Microinsurance Agency Tanzania in late 2008.

In an exclusive interview with Microfinance Focus, AKAM’s Microinsurance Specialist and member of the Microinsurance Network, Peter Wrede discusses some of the complexities of microinsurance products and the progress made so far.

Microinsurance Innovation Facility’s launches first issue of CCB Update

The Microinsurance Innovation Facility published the first issue of the Consulting and Capacity Building (CCB) Update. This new publication highlights the latest news from the Consulting & Capacity Building (CCB) Programme and presents the results of two important meetings (the Consultants' round table in Frankfurt and the International congress of actuaries in Cape Town).

The CCB Programme aims to empower microinsurance consultants and providers to deliver value to the poor. The contexts in which microinsurance is developed, promoted and delivered differ greatly in terms of regions, resources and perceptions and to answer this variety the CCB Programme offers a range of customised services to suit particular needs and capacities. The three main components are Advisory Service, Professional Development and Resource Centre.

MicroEnsure runner-up in Financial Times Award

Leading insurance intermediary for the poor, MicroEnsure finished runner-up in a prestigious international industry award with 156 entrants from 110 institutions across 44 countries. MicroEnsure came second in the 2010 Financial Times Sustainable Banking Awards in the category "Banking at the Base of the Pyramid".

The awards, organised by the Financial Times and International Finance Corporation (IFC) were announced at a ceremony in London on 3 June attended by more than 250 senior bankers and industry leaders.

New study to develop an Integrated Risk Management approach

The Micro Insurance Academy and Centre for Risk and Insurance Research (at BI Norwegian School of Management), are undertaking a study on the development of an Integrated Risk Management framework for microinsurance units. For the study, they are seeking practitioners (microinsurers/insurers/ reinsurers), technical assistance providers and other experts in the microinsurance domain to participate in a survey applying the Delphi technique. The deadline for registration is 2 June, 2010.

This study will primarily aim to undertake a qualitative risk assessment exercise by gathering collective opinions of experts in the microinsurance domain, spread across different geographical areas.
