Translating strategy into action – Network’s member meeting 2012

In June, the Microinsurance Network held for the third time its member meeting in Königstein, which brought together over 50 people from 21 different member organisations. This two-day meeting provided members with the opportunity to share information and discuss a range of topics with other experts in the field of microinsurance.

JMM

The overriding aim of this year’s meeting was to translate the new strategic framework into action. The Network has identified four priority issues that need to be addressed in order to provide effective risk management alternatives to low-income people: increasing supply, improving client value, supporting conducive environments on a regulatory and policy level, and enabling appropriate infrastructure. Almost fifteen working and discussion groups have developed together a joint workplan that will guide the Network’s activities in future.

The Network is now able to apply itself with more focus and direction, and remain relevant in this rapidly evolving sector.

New West-African insurance legislation recognises microinsuance key performance indicators

June 2012

The Inter African Conference for the Insurance Market (CIMA) has adopted a microinsurance regulation that integrates the key performance indicators developed by the Performance Working Group of the Microinsurance Network. CIMA announced in April 2012 that an agreement has been signed by all its 14 member states to implement new microinsurance regulations. This landmark occasion represents not only a significant step towards a regulated microinsurance sector in the region, but it will also ensure the low-income populations are better protected against life’s perils.

Moreover, the new regulation requires all microinsurers to report 9 out of the 10 key performance indicators that were developed by the ADA and BRS in collaboration with GIZ and the Performance Working Group of the Microinsurance Network. The set of indicators, which have been promoted throughout the developing world since 2007, is a management tool for microinsurance providers to ensure their products are financially viable, and of real value to their low-income clients.

6th Asia Conference on Microinsurance

June 2012

The 6th Asia Conference on Microinsurance, organised by Asia Insurance Review and supported by the Microinsurance Network, the Micro Insurance Academy, the ILO's Microinsurance Innovation Facility, MicroEnsure, ICMIF and the Philippines Insurers and Reinsurers Association (PIRA) will be held in Manila from 24 to 25 July 2012 and will focus on “Microinsurance as a Growth Catalyst for Insurance to Reach Out to the Masses”.

The two-day event will look at how Asia as a whole has embraced microinsurance with its two microinsurance powerhouses - China and India – spearheading the trend; ways to build capacity and expedite the maturation process of the microinsurance market; how insurance companies can better position themselves to capitalise on the emerging growth opportunities in microinsurance; as well as insights into latest market developments on successful microinsurance models and case studies of successful schemes and operational lessons. This conference will once again provide the rallying point for stakeholders and microinsurance experts to get together including representatives from international organisations, NGOs, MFIs, multilateral development banks, development-aid agencies, insurance and reinsurance companies, actuaries, underwriters, academics, policymakers and regulators.

Health Working Group develops new resource that provides a global view of health insurance programmes

A new resource captures more than 100 health insurance programmes designed for low-income populations in developing countries, providing a commanding lead in developing a comprehensive database of this emerging industry. The resource is made available by the Health Working Group of the Microinsurance Network and Abt Associates in close collaboration with the International Labour Organization’s Microinsurance Innovation Facility, Results for Development, and Denis Garand and Associates.

Today, tens of millions of low-income people have access to health insurance coverage—an impressive number but only a very small proportion of the potential market. As the number of programmes continues to grow, so does the volume of lessons learned on the design, administration and delivery of health insurance products and services for low-income households in developing countries. The Microinsurance Network Health Working Group’s Inventory of Health Insurance Products and Lessons Learned brings that knowledge together in one place.

The inventory offers snapshot profiles of health insurance schemes in more than 40 developing countries. This searchable database, hosted by the ILO’s Microinsurance Innovation Facility and Results for Development’s Center for Health Market Innovations, which is available to the public at:

The inventory includes information on each health insurance scheme as well as emerging lessons extracted from academic journals, publications from industry leaders, and submissions from practitioners.
