The Capacity Building Working Group responds to the increased need for capacity building by compiling and developing training materials and programmes; striving towards coherent basic quality standards. Capacity building and development are crucial in microinsurance as the sector is developping at a rapid pace. This Working Group collaborates with the Financial Performance Indicator initiative and is producing an Introduction to Microinsurance and Business Plan training.
NewsThe Capacity Building Working Group held a workshop on Microinsurance Business Planning in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, just before the 7th International Microinsurance Conference. The training was held in English and Spanish, and more information will be available soon. Annual workplanIn 2011, the Capacity Building Working Group will:
- Identify capacity building needs via
- A workshop with Network members, microinsurance & technical assistance providers
- A survey within various forums such as LinkedIn and the Microinsurance Innovation Facility (Knowledge Centre)
- Contribution to the Network marketplace
- Select the most important issues for material and tool development, such as
- Training of Trainers (ToT) for microinsurance Business Plan
- Risk management solutions tool
- Collecting training contents for licensed MI agents from regulators and others
- Test existing tools and determine the feasibilty of a "road map" on applying microinsurance in practice
The members should engage in:
- Joint development of training courses, publications, manuals with the respective core group;
- Peer group review of new material and training courses;
- Sharing of existing material; establishing a pool of material;
- Organising workshops on various aspects of capacity development;
- Funding of capacity building activities;
- Creating linkages to existing capacity building measures and projects across donors and training organisations.

The final draft of the Introduction to Microinsurance manual is available for member peer review in the Capacity Building Forum (members only).
Past activities include:
- Joint activities of the Capacity Building and Performance IndicatorsWorking Groups: Development of a training course based on the "Performance Indicators" toolkit and conducting three pilot trainings in Africa, Asia, Latin America;
- General microinsurance tools and materials (funded by GTZ): Tool Adjustment Workshop.
The Capacity Building Working Group was set up in November 2006 to acknowledge the need in training and professionnalisation of the microinsurance sector Mode of operationsThe Working Group will operate as follows:
- Joint development of training courses, publications, and manuals with core groups of 4 to 6 members that are responsible for results;
- Peer group review of new material among group members and other microinsurance experts;
- Organisation of workshops on new training materials with microinsurance practitioners and technical assistance providers;
- Creation of linkages to donors and training organisations and collaborating with other Working Groups (especially the Performance Indicators Working Group);
- Annual meetings;
- Regular updates with Working Group members (virtually) and occasionally exchange and discussions on the phone.
