The insurance industry is evolving rapidly, with new distribution models and technologies enhancing accessibility and streamlining the customer journey. Insurers are increasingly collaborating with diverse channels — from agents and brokers to mobile operators and digital platforms — to reach underserved markets, reduce costs, and deliver financial security to more people.
According to the Landscape of Microinsurance 2023, in Africa, 54% of the population covered by insurance is covered through agents and distributors. However, the report noted that while networks are the preferred distribution channels, the blending of physical agents, aggregators, and MFIs with digital platforms creates a more effective distribution model for agriculture insurance. Emerging models in digital distribution are gaining traction, though they haven't yet become the standard. This upward trend is fuelled primarily by mobile network operators (MNOs) and the expanding landscape of Insurtech and fintech across Africa. Technology serves as a powerful enabler for product simplification and reducing the need for extensive documentation.
This session will dive into these dynamics through three case studies. The aim is to uncover actionable strategies that ensure sustainable growth for insurers and their partners, as well as enhanced financial protection for clients.
