Women face many challenges that block access to microinsurance products, despite being most in need of insurance and other financial protection measures. There are a number of reasons for this, not least the cultural barriers that still prevail, but there are steps we can take to change this. For example, better collection of gender-disaggregated data would go a long way, but unconscious bias across the industry has held this back to date.
The Global Shield against climate risks helps vulnerable countries to develop viable long-term protection and preparedness measures against climate risks with a focus on ensuring a rapid response when disasters hit and thereby helping to reduce follow-up costs and accelerate economic recovery.
In this article, Astrid Zwick, the Co-Director of the Global Shield Secretariat, gives us her thoughts on developments in the microinsurance sector, the difference the Global Shield could make in terms of providing and facilitating more effective pre-arranged finance against disasters, and what additional support countries need to address the ever-growing implications of climate change.
