Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are the number one cause of death and disability in the world – often resulting in long-term health consequences and creating a need for long-term treatment and care.
Middle-to-low and low-income countries, where more than 80% of premature NCD deaths occur, are disproportionately affected - yet their healthcare systems are not equipped to deal with them. This presents an opportunity for the inclusive insurance sector to support low-income countries in tackling this significant challenge.
Kenya has long been seen as a pioneer in the microinsurance arena in Sub-Saharan Africa with several early microinsurance products having already been piloted in the country and the country's vibrant microinsurance sector has been quick to try new technologies.
While innovation accelerators have been around for some time, microinsurance-specific accelerators are a relatively new concept. In this article, we highlight the success of the first BimaLab Accelerator which offers an environment to develop new products and trial customer journeys by taking advantage of Kenya’s increasing use of technology.
