At the European Microfinance Award 2025 in Luxembourg, Radiant Yacu’s win marked a defining moment for both the company and Rwanda’s microinsurance sector. The award recognised not only a series of firsts – Rwanda’s first winner and the first specialised microinsurance provider to take the prize – but also years of work to make insurance accessible, affordable and trusted by low-income households. For Radiant Yacu, the recognition goes beyond prestige: it reinforces confidence among partners and clients, validates its customer-centred approach to claims and distribution, and energises a next phase focused on digitalisation, partnerships and reaching more vulnerable communities, while acknowledging that much work still lies ahead to close the protection gap.

As climate risk insurance expands across Pacific Island States, affordability remains a decisive barrier for low-income households and small businesses. Drawing on new research from UN University’s Institute for Environment and Human Security, this blog examines how well-designed premium support schemes – using subsidies, concessional finance and guarantees – can help close persistent protection gaps. It also outlines how UNCDF’s proposed Insurance Guarantee and Financing Facility aims to translate these insights into practice, supporting sustainable insurance markets while extending coverage to those most exposed to climate shocks.
