At the International Conference on Inclusive Insurance (ICII) 2026 in Kigali, the Microinsurance Network shared early data from its 2026 Landscape of Microinsurance. The picture is encouraging: products that stay the course are growing fast, and cover is reaching new risks. But with climate and economic shocks intensifying, the data also puts a price on what the sector still isn’t doing. Drawing on the Landscape plenary and highlights from a week of sessions in Kigali, this article explores what’s working, where the industry falls short, and what it will take to finish the story.

New podcast by Microinsurance Network, Munich Re Foundation, ILO’s Impact Insurance Facility in collaboration with Financial Inclusion Unlocked: 20 years of the Microinsurance Compendium
Twenty years ago, Protecting the poor: A microinsurance compendium set out to answer a big question: how can insurance work for low-income people? Published in 2006 and followed by a second volume in 2012, it drew on schemes from around the world to give one of the most thorough overviews of microinsurance at the time.
To mark the 20th anniversary, we’ve teamed up with Munich Re Foundation, the ILO’s Impact Insurance Facility and Financial Inclusion Unlocked for a new podcast series. Authors of the compendium and newer voices in inclusive insurance look back at what has held up, what has changed, and what they’d write differently today.
The first episode is out now, featuring Craig Churchill, Chief, Social Finance Programme at International Labour Organization. Stay tuned for new episodes every week.

In Tanzania, for example, it helped reform the Community Health Fund to bring rural and informal-sector populations into social health protection.
